Is the serial RS232 cable you use to connect to a SLC process a special cable? I was told it is, but in the past ive used 2 different cables that were not AB, just normal serial cables and they both worked.

Nothing special, except the price'

I've made one in the field in a pinch before. Just need 3 wires; ground, RX, and TX. This would be pins 5, 3, and 2 respectively on your standard 9-pin D-Sub. If you connect the RX and TX backwards the first time, don't worry; won't hurt anything.

Also important to know that you will need to make or buy a "null modem" cable. This is where pins 2 and 3 are crossed or pin 2 on one 9-pin Dsub goes to pin 3 on the other end and 3 to 2. As for special cables you may be thinking about the Micrologix controllers which have a circular connector. I dont know any way to communicate with that port except for one if the cables that AB is very proud of ... ie expensive.
